The candidate will conduct research on large datasets to identify genes that are functionally active in the progression of atherosclerotic diseases and translate these genes into relevant biomarkers. Our multidisciplinary team does cutting edge translational research in (epi)genetics and single-cell expression of atherosclerosis. Our focus lies in identifying new biomarkers and disease-causing genes of atherosclerosis. We perform our analyses in a sex-specific manner as this approach has proven to identify new biological pathways of disease. Our projects are multidisciplinary and translational, spanning clinical cardiology, molecular genetics, biostatistics, and functional cellular assays. We are an internationally oriented group and have multiple ongoing collaborations with research groups in Europe and the USA. The position entails working with large databases consisting of clinical information combined with (epi)genetics data (genome-wide array genotyping, DNA methylation data, RNA-seq and single-cell RNA-seq) for the identification of biomarkers and new disease-causing genes of atherosclerosis. This work will be conducted in the context of an ERC Consolidator grant that will run for 5 years.
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Post-Doctoral researcher to join the PI group of Dr. Hester den Ruijter. This group is embedded within the Laboratory of Experimental Cardiology of the UMC Utrecht. This department has a long-standing tradition of world class research on biomarkers and atherosclerosis. The Laboratory is an integral part of the spearhead of Circulatory Health which has been set-up to advance cardiovascular research for the benefit of patients. The successful applicant will be expected to develop novel ideas, apply them to the analysis of the data and interpret the emerging results. She/he will also be actively involved in in silico prioritizing key driver genes and performing/guiding functional studies in cellular systems together with other members of the team. You have a PhD degree in (epi)genetics, molecular biology, or a related discipline and have a track record of scientific publications. Furthermore, you are proficient in statistical and programming languages (like R, Python) and statistical analysis methods – proven by your publication track. You are able to guide PhD students appointed on the project, so you are a team player that shares knowledge and skills with colleagues. You can work independentle, have excellent organizational skills and you are motivated, creative and hard-working. You are willing to apply for extra funding (e.g., VENI) and report findings to grant agencies You have excellent written and verbal communication skill and you are fluent in English (written and spoken).
The maximum salary for this position (100%) is € 4.481,00 gross per month based on full-time employment (work week 36 hours). This job is based on a temporary position for 12 months with the possibility of extension.
